eCommerce Up – Retail Stores Down

The Global Financial Crisis (GFC) has boosted eCommerce, according to the OECD. One reason for the surge in ecommerce is that “as consumers have become more cost-conscious, they are increasingly going online to compare products and save money”.

The OECD report adds “The crisis is also driving more businesses online, attracted to the Internet as a means to increase visibility and markets at relatively low cost. And business-to-business (B2B) e-commerce makes up the lion’s share of online sales: in the US, B2B generated $US3.1 trillion in sales in 2008 compared to $US130 billion for sales to consumers.”

According to the US Census Bureau, in 2008 only 4% of consumer sales were on-line (B2C) but a significant 27% of total business sales (B2B) were done by eCommerce.
